Almond Oil

Light, forgiving, and the one to start with

Almond Oil — still life

Sweet almond oil is pressed from the kernel of the almond, and it is the most beginner-friendly oil in this index. It is light enough not to leave your feet slipping inside a sock, rich in vitamin E, and mild enough that it rarely upsets sensitive skin.

On feet it does two jobs. Alone, it is a straightforward moisturiser for dry, flaking, or tight skin. Mixed with an essential oil, it becomes the carrier — the neutral base that dilutes something concentrated down to a strength skin can tolerate. Almost every essential oil on this list needs a carrier, and this is the default one.

The warmth it brings to circulation is the reason it turns up for cold feet and for burning feet alike — it is not heating or cooling in itself, it simply helps whatever you have mixed into it move and absorb.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Nightly moisturiser

A teaspoon warmed between the palms, worked into clean dry feet before bed. Cotton socks over the top hold it against the skin overnight.

  2. 2

    As a carrier

One tablespoon of almond oil to three or four drops of any essential oil. That ratio — roughly one to two percent — is the safe working dilution for adult skin.

  3. 3

    Circulation massage

Warm slightly, then massage from the toes upward toward the ankle. Working upward is deliberate: it follows the direction blood returns to the heart.

Before you use it

  • Skip it entirely if you have a nut allergy.
  • Do not apply oil between the toes — trapped moisture there breeds fungus.
  • Oil on a bathroom floor is slippery. Put socks on before you stand up.
