Hammer Toes

Hammer toe is a foot deformity that is caused when the toe is permanently bent at its middle joint (PIPJ), making the toe appear like a hammer. It is most common in the second, third and fourth toes of the feet.

What Causes Hammer Toe?

Hammer toe is caused by the prolonged use of ill-fitting shoes that leads to uneven muscle stress in the feet. Also you can blame your parents. Genetics can be a factor as well. Hammer toe can lead to the formation of other foot problems like corns, calluses and blisters over the protruding middle joints or the tips of the toes. This will lead to pain and discomfort.

Treatment

Hammer toe should be treated at an early stage before other foot complications develop. You should take care to buy and wear footwear with wide and high forefoot space. This prevents your toes from having to scrunch up, and so keeps them from being irritated by the underside of the shoe. They will also be able to spread out freely, which helps to distribute weight evenly

To deal with pain in your feet and toes, you can soak your feet in warm water with a few drops of anti-inflammatory essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint oil. Use gel pads or gel caps over the bent toes to keep them from rubbing against the shoe. Exercise and stretch your shoes regularly to strengthen your muscles and keep them more flexible. Wear shoes which are soft and have roomy toe boxes to keep the hammer toe comfortable.
