Condition

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the human body, as well as the one most commonly ruptured. Achilles tendonitis is when this structure ruptures or tears due to sudden or excessive strain. The most common causes of this condition sports injuries and other strenuous physical activities, such as:

  • Strenuous forms of exercises like fast running, jogging or rapid walking that put excessive strain on the calf muscles.
  • Not warming up properly before a vigorous exercise session can put a lot of strain on your calf muscles causing the tendon to tear.
  • Climbing staircases or steep hills can also cause the Achilles tendon to tear.
  • A sudden pull or trauma to the calf muscles can also result in tear of this tendon.
  • Ill-fitting footwear and flat feet can also lead to Achilles tendonitis.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis

  • A tear in the tendon often starts as a subtle pain in the calf area which gradually worsens with continued exertion of the calves.
  • Severe pain in the calf region, limited to the region of the tear, and appearing on continuous exertion.
  • Pain, swelling and tenderness especially in the morning in the area just below the calf muscles, at the back, where the Achilles tendon joins the heel bone.
  • A feeling of heaviness in the affected area causing slowness while walking.
  • Stiffness which gradually disappears as you warm up or become active.

Treatment for Achilles Tendonitis

The best treatment for Achilles tendonitis is usually allowing the feet ample time to rest. Wrapping a firm bandage to restrict the movement of the tendon is generally enough to reduce the symptoms markedly. There are also some herbal remedies which can provide significant relief.

Warm oil massage - Massage your calves up to the heel with essential oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, cardamom and camphor. These essential oils speed up the healing of your sprint tendons. Avoid all forms of heavy exercise, but keep your legs flexible by light activity like swimming or stretching which are not likely to harm or stress the ruptured tendon. Achilles tendonitis can be generally healed at home itself with these natural treatments. But if you have severe pain or other symptoms it is advisable to get a medical evaluation. In the most serious cases, surgery is required to repair the tears.
