Geranium

Balances skin, calms an angry nail fold

Geranium — still life

Rose geranium oil has a balancing effect on skin — it moderates oil production whether the skin is producing too much or too little, which is unusual and makes it broadly useful. Alongside that it is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and a mild styptic, meaning it helps small bleeding stop.

The book pairs it with ingrown toenails, and that combination is exactly right. The skin beside an ingrown nail is inflamed, sometimes broken, sometimes bleeding slightly, and prone to infection. Geranium addresses all four at once, gently enough to be used on tender tissue.

It also happens to be one of the pleasantest oils here, which counts for something in a treatment you have to keep up for weeks.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Nail fold care

Two drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil, applied around the sore edge of the nail after soaking, twice daily.

  2. 2

    Soothing soak

Five drops in a warm basin with a tablespoon of Epsom salt. Fifteen minutes, then dry and apply the blend above.

  3. 3

    General skin balance

Three drops in a tablespoon of jojoba for feet that are somehow both oily and flaking.

Before you use it

  • Avoid during pregnancy.
  • Can affect blood sugar — worth knowing if you are diabetic, and another reason to ask your doctor first.
  • An ingrown nail that is hot, throbbing or producing pus needs a podiatrist now, not an oil.
