Frankincense

Old, slow, and good at regeneration

Frankincense — still life

Frankincense is the resin of the Boswellia tree, and it is among the oldest traded medicinal substances in the world. Its active boswellic acids are well-studied anti-inflammatories — enough so that Boswellia extract is sold specifically for arthritis — and the oil carries a genuine tissue-regenerative quality alongside that.

On feet those two properties cover a lot of ground. Inflammation in an arthritic toe joint. Skin that has cracked, scarred, or simply become old and thin and stopped repairing itself well. Frankincense works slowly on both.

It is grounding and quieting to use, which suits an evening routine.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Joint blend

Four drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil, massaged around a stiff or arthritic toe joint morning and night.

  2. 2

    Regenerative night oil

Three drops with three of lavender in a tablespoon of avocado oil, worked into heels and any cracked or scarred skin before bed.

  3. 3

    Evening soak

Five drops in a warm basin with Epsom salt. Twenty minutes.

Before you use it

  • Avoid during pregnancy.
  • Frankincense may thin the blood — relevant if you are on a blood thinner or facing surgery.
  • Buy Boswellia carterii or serrata; much of what is sold cheaply is diluted.
  • Dilute before use.
