Benzoin Oil

The old remedy for skin that has split

Benzoin Oil — still life

Benzoin is a resin, tapped from the Styrax tree in Southeast Asia, and it is thick, sweet-smelling and slightly sticky. It has been used on cracked and chapped skin for centuries, and it appears in tincture of benzoin, which hospitals still use to toughen skin and help dressings adhere.

That is its distinctive quality here: it does not only moisturise, it forms a protective film and encourages the skin to close. For a heel that has split down to the raw layer, that combination is more useful than a moisturiser alone.

It is also antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, so it protects the fissure while it heals.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Cracked heel treatment

Three drops in a tablespoon of shea butter or coconut oil, worked into the fissure at night. Cotton socks over the top.

  2. 2

    Protective blend

Two drops of benzoin with two of lavender in a tablespoon of carrier oil. The benzoin seals, the lavender calms.

Before you use it

  • Benzoin causes allergic contact reactions more often than most oils. Patch test properly and wait a full day.
  • Avoid during pregnancy.
  • Sticky, and it will mark bedding.
  • A crack that is bleeding freely or looks infected needs medical attention.
