Stiff ankle is also medically known as osteochondritis of the ankle. It is caused by an abrupt twisting or bending of the ankle joints which results in putting too much stress on the ligaments. The cartilage, bone or ligaments may be torn or inflamed. This type of injury is common in sports. The symptoms are usually swelling, tenderness, pain and stiffness of the ankle.
Treatment
Treating a stiff ankle requires that the foot be given sufficient rest. Cold compresses may be applied to the area to reduce the swelling. Once the swelling has gone down, hot compresses will help to reduce muscle stiffness and to accelerate the pace of healing. In severe cases of stiff ankle, surgical intervention may be required to remove the split cartilage pieces from the ankle.
